The 53rd Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) – Your Guide to Hong Kong’s Biggest Art Event

The 53rd Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) is set to be a mesmerizing event, showcasing over 1,300 international and local artists through more than 125 performances across 45 programs, along with approximately 350 outreach and educational events. Scheduled from February 28 to March 29, 2025, this mega festival will feature a diverse range of genres, including music, musicals, Chinese opera, dance, theatre, and multimedia.The festival will present both classic and brand-new creations, with top talents from Paris, Czech Republic, and Vienna. The festival opens with the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and closes with a performance by the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra.

Highlights to Watch For

  • Carmen: Featuring costumes and sets in their original designs from its Paris premiere in 1875.
  • Time by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani: A theatrical work that combines minimalistic music with a visual dreamscape, featuring Japanese dancer Rin Ishihara. Performances are scheduled for March 13–15, 2025, at the Lyric Theatre, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Wan Chai.
  • Sir András Schiff and Cappella Andrea Barca: Performances are slated for March 18 and 19, 2025, at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
  • The Waste Land: A contemporary interpretation of T.S. Eliot’s poem, on March 15 and 16, 2025.
  • Shanghai Yue Opera House: Selected Excerpts: Award-winning artists will present excerpts from classics.
  • Hong Kong Sinfonietta—Great Piano Concertos: Pavel Kolesnikov Plays Beethoven: Showcasing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4.
  • Nureyev & Friends—A Ballet Gala Tribute: Performances are scheduled for March 21 and 22, 2025, at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
