Tai Kwun Contemporary is proud to present “Alicja Kwade: Pretopia,” a captivating exhibition that marks the Polish-born artist’s first solo institutional show in Hong Kong. As part of Tai Kwun Contemporary’s new Breakthrough series, this exhibition showcases nine works spanning different periods of Kwade’s career, alongside newly commissioned installations tailored to the unique history and architecture of Tai Kwun’s F Hall.
A Conceptual State Preceding Utopia
Alicja Kwade, born in Katowice, Poland, and currently based in Berlin, crafts a perceptually extraordinary multiverse within Tai Kwun. “Pretopia” invites audiences to contemplate their perception of time, space, systems, and the world, offering a sensory experience in a sculptural environment that intertwines reality and illusion. Visitors can expect to see thought-provoking pieces such as a clock turning in reverse, rocks floating in orbit, and clock hands subtly shifting visibility with time.
A Dialogue with History and Space
Kwade’s exhibition creates a sculptural environment where each artwork interacts harmoniously with the others, transforming the space into a dynamic exploration of interconnected ideas. Her installations often incorporate everyday objects like clocks, mirrors, gates, and bricks, prompting reflection on how we interpret social structures and the nature of reality.

Waiting Pavilions: A Site-Specific Installation
In addition to “Pretopia,” visitors can also experience Kwade’s first site-specific installation in Hong Kong, “Waiting Pavilions,” in Tai Kwun’s Prison Yard. This work transforms the landscape, investigating the passage of time within the setting of a former prison and bridging the past and present of this landmark heritage site. The installation features glass structures and bronze cast Monobloc chairs, reflecting on the burdens we carry and the idea of waiting. “Waiting Pavilions” will remain on display until late 2026.
Part of the Breakthrough Series
“Alicja Kwade: Pretopia” is part of Tai Kwun Contemporary’s “Breakthrough” series, which highlights emerging artistic positions through solo presentations and innovative formats. Alongside Kwade’s exhibition, solo exhibitions by Hu Xiaoyuan (“Veering”) and Maeve Brennan (“Records”) will also be featured.
